Kevin Pietersen was picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL auctions today. He had played for the Delhi Daredevils in 2014.
There has been a huge cut in his value though. He had earned a 1.5 million Dollar contract last year, but, he could not even get half millions this time around.
Pietersen is not playing at the international level at present and it does not seem as if he would be doing that in the near future. He has become a freelance cricketer now and at this point of time, he happens to play only in the T20 leagues.
He does not play domestic Cricket back home either. So, the regularity in his game is not there. And, batting is all about rhythm. You play a tournament here, a tournament there, it just does not do.
And, that’s why, since his international retirement, Pietersen has not batted with that ferocious attitude of his. He has been rather quiet. Even in some of the fifties that he has scored, his strike rate has been quite modest. He is deteriorating as a player and that’s all down to him not playing regular Cricket.
He is probably going to be the captain again in IPL 8. Given Shikhar Dhawan’s horrific captaincy the previous season, the Sunrisers management would not go back to him for sure and Eoin Morgan is obviously not an experienced leader. He is having hard times leading England and his batting is letting him down too. So, Tom Moody would not like to put some more weight on him. It would be Pietersen by the looks of it and if that’s the case, he will have to lead from the front. He had not been able to do that at all at Delhi.
